War Bonds: The Songs and Letters of World War II

November 14, 2009
8:00 p.m.

$35

This entertaining cabaret is a musical journey through the war that redefined the world.  Award-winning artists David zum Brunnen and Serena Ebhardt fill the stage with 1940's tunes and World War II memories.  Actual veterans' letters weave a sentimental journey back through the days when blackouts and rationing were a small sacrifice in order to obtain freedom; a time when Rosie the Riveter discovered she could take care of herself; a time when African-Americans, who were segregated at home, integrated abroad to became heroes; and when a man's only wish was to be home for Christmas.  Twenty-two memorable songs are performed with pizzazz.  This show was filmed for public television as a companion to Ken Burns' epic documentary The War.

John Brown Quintet

January 30, 2010
8:00 p.m.

$34

This award-winning jazz quintet specializes in performing music from the time-honored bebop and hardbop eras of jazz, bringing new life to some of the best-known classics from the Great American Songbook as well as introducing their original music.  Tributes to John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra infuse the evening with rich performances.  The group's diversity of styles, the very apparent personal and professional love they have for each other, the utter lack of phoning in even a single note is such a gift to an audience.  There's a twinkle in every eye on stage, a trace of someone's mischievous grin that keeps us all anticipating what comes next.  The music is far larger than ‘quintet' denotes.  There's orchestra there.  There's symphony there.  There's phenomenal musicality.  It's five-point virtuosity with every tune.

Susan Werner

May 6, 2010
8:00 p.m.

$30

Susan Werner has become one of the defining artists of the folk music genre. Over the course of her colorful career, this singer songwriter has cultivated a reputation as a daring and innovative songwriter with a killer live show.  Her songs effortlessly slide among folk, jazz and pop and are delivered with sassy wit and Midwestern charm.  She is classically trained and boundlessly versatile, alternately playing the piano and the guitar.  Nashville's Music Row summed it up with “This woman is great, period.”  Stephen Barefoot, executive director of the North Carolina Presenters Consortium, who has organized thousands of performances, said this about her recent concert at Thalian Hall in Wilmington:  “It ranks among the top three performances of my lifetime -- so phenomenal I can't even begin to describe it.”
