Art Walk Friday, August 27 in Downtown Concord
With artwork by more than 100 artists at 13 locations, Friday’s downtown Concord Art Walk will be the perfect way to end your summer. The free event will feature visual art displays and entertainment. Artists will be on hand at many locations to talk about their work and demonstrate techniques. A highlight of Art Walk will be two new exhibitions at The Galleries in Cabarrus County’s historic courthouse at 65 Union Street S. Multi-Tasking features works by six artists who create artwork in more than one medium. The Cabarrus Art Guild Juried Exhibition includes works by 35 artists from five counties. Winners of seven awards will be announced at 7 p.m. during Art Walk.
Cabarrus Visual Artists Eligible to Apply for Regional Artist Grants
One of the Cabarrus Arts Council’s goals is to support outstanding artists and one of the ways we do that is to join with other arts councils in sponsoring the Regional Artist Project Grants. The deadline to apply for this year’s grants is Wednesday, August 18, at noon. Visual artists and filmmakers may apply for grants this year. Artists have received funding to work with master artists, to support the cost of an exhibition, to upgrade marketing materials, to purchase equipment or to attend conferences or workshops. Several of Cabarrus County’s wonderful artists are past recipients of the Regional Artist Grant, including Walter Stanford, Beth Stafford, Lin Barnhardt, Byron Baldwin, Jeff Pender, Ken Barry and Tomoo Kitamura.

If our record hot temperatures and the state of the economy have put you in the doldrums, here’s the perfect solution: fun and free arts activities! You can go to two free concerts and see a wonderful art exhibition right here in Cabarrus County this week. The Shakers are playing at Union Street Live in downtown Concord on Thursday, July 15, and Too Much Sylvia is playing Saturday, July 17, in Village Park in Kannapolis. A wonderful exhibition, “Through the Rabbit Hole,” is on display at The Galleries at the Cabarrus Arts Council.
Cabarrus Arts Council Leaders among 300 Arts Advocates Who Met Members of the NC General Assembly Wednesday in Raleigh
Three members of the Cabarrus Arts Council staff joined more than 300 other arts advocates from across North Carolina in Raleigh Wednesday for Arts Day. Noelle Rhodes Scott, president and CEO; Pat Verner, communications director; and Sara Heiser, theatre manager visited the North Carolina legislative office building where they met with Cabarrus representatives Jeff Barnhart and Linda Johnson, Rowan representative Fred Steen and Rockingham representative Nelson Cole to talk about the importance of the arts in North Carolina. They encouraged the representatives to retain the governor’s recommended Grassroots and arts program grant levels as well as to encourage an arts requirement for high school graduation.
Deadline June 1 for Cabarrus Arts Council Grants for Arts Organizations and Projects
The deadline for community organizations and schools to apply for Cabarrus Arts Council grants is June 1 at noon. Grants are available in three categories: Organization Support, Project Assistance and Arts Education. The grants are partially funded by Grassroots Funds from the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency. Union Street Live Kicks Off Thursday, Kannapolis Concert Series Starts June 5
Summer may be a month away, but you’ll feel like it’s here already when Union Street Live kicks off its season Thursday night with the Tim Clark Band. The popular series presents a free beach music concert on the third Thursday of each month, 6-9 p.m., on the historic courthouse lawn at 65 Union Street S. You’ll also want to mark your calendar for the diverse Kannapolis concert series which will bring six nights of free concerts to Village Park beginning Saturday, June 5, with Kannapolis Rocks the ‘80s.
Spring into Arts Festival Saturday in Downtown Concord
With outstanding artists, wonderful musicians, hands-on children’s activities and delicious food and drink, the Spring into Arts Festival on Saturday, May 15, in beautiful downtown Concord will give people of all ages the opportunity to immerse themselves in the arts. The outdoor event on Union Street will open at 10 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. Art collectors and art lovers will find plenty to enjoy. Art Walk Friday in Downtown Concord to Feature Artwork at 13 Locations
The Cabarrus Arts Council’s Art Walk Friday in downtown Concord will feature artwork by more than 80 artists at 13 locations on Union and Spring streets and an Emmy Award-winning documentary at the Davis Theatre. A highlight will be The Galleries’ 19-artist invitational exhibition, A Time and Place, which celebrates a love of the land and places held dear. Many of the artists will be on hand to discuss their work, and several locations will have free refreshments. Russ McIntire will play music in front of Mullis Music at 31 Union Street S, and the Adam Ramsey Miller Gallery at 21 Union Street S will have children’s art activities. Hosted by Modern Film Fest, the documentary will be shown at the Davis Theatre after Art Walk ends at 9 p.m. All activities are free.
Old Courthouse Theatre and Black Box Productions Presents “Countergirls”
The third production in the Old Courthouse Theatre’s new “The Living Room Reading Series,” Countergirls is a full-length comedy by Michael Russell, set at the lunch counter of a F. W. Woolworth’s in a small Southern town in 1990. The show will be Sunday, January 17 at 4 p.m. at the Old Courthouse Theater located at 49 Spring Street NW, Concord. Admission is free.
Acting Up Children’s Theatre presents FAME
