Acoustic jazz duo Vocal Point, featuring René and Mike Russell, will perform Thursday, September 3, at the Davis Theatre. Vocal Point has played in Las Vegas and Los Angeles and was a regular at the former Blockbuster Pavilion for several summers, opening for major acts including Chicago, Linda Ronstadt and John Tesh. James Ingram, Patty Austin, Etta James, Ricky Lee Jones and Bonnie Raitt are among the artists whose music they perform.

A new exhibition celebrating trompe l’oeil, artwork that fools the eye by mimicking reality, will be on display August 28-October 10 at the Arts Council Galleries. There are foods that look ready to eat, books seemingly ready have the pages turned and two-dimensional works that almost have to be touched to comprehend they are not three-dimensional. The show presents artwork created to look very real in ceramics, acrylics, oil, glass, wood and paper.

Friday’s Art Walk in downtown Concord will be highlighted by the opening of the Arts Council Galleries’ fabulous new show, For Real?—Art of Deception. Art Walk will include visual arts displays at 12 locations on Union Street, the awards ceremony for the Cabarrus Art Guild Juried Show, a book-signing by North Carolina artists Walter Stanford and Joel Haas and entertainment by singer/songwriter David Domingo. Many of the artists will be on hand to discuss their work, and several locations will have free refreshments.

The Davis Theatre’s popular Jeff Whittington Presents. . . concert series will return this year with a season featuring some of the best bluegrass, old time and jazz musicians in our area. Organized by well-known bluegrass artist Whittington, the series emphasizes acoustic music and focuses on local and regional talent.
