Art Walk Friday in Downtown Concord to Feature Artwork at 13 Locations
The Cabarrus Arts Council’s Art Walk Friday in downtown Concord will feature artwork by more than 80 artists at 13 locations on Union and Spring streets and an Emmy Award-winning documentary at the Davis Theatre. A highlight will be The Galleries’ 19-artist invitational exhibition, A Time and Place, which celebrates a love of the land and places held dear. Many of the artists will be on hand to discuss their work, and several locations will have free refreshments. Russ McIntire will play music in front of Mullis Music at 31 Union Street S, and the Adam Ramsey Miller Gallery at 21 Union Street S will have children’s art activities. Hosted by Modern Film Fest, the documentary will be shown at the Davis Theatre after Art Walk ends at 9 p.m. All activities are free.
‘Empress of the Unexpected’ Susan Werner to Present Concert Thursday, May 6
Susan Werner, the singer that NPR Music called “empress of the unexpected,” will perform Thursday, May 6, at 8 p.m. at the Davis Theatre in Concord. Tickets are $30. One of the defining artists in folk music today, Werner has cultivated a reputation as a daring and innovative songwriter with a spectacular live show. She boldly endeavors to weave old with new to create altogether new genres of music when existing ones do not suit her muse, and she regularly keeps audiences guessing and laughing simultaneously. Most of her work infuses traditional music styles and methods with her unmistakable contemporary worldview, constantly challenging listeners to experience music from a fresh and unexpected perspective.
Exhibition at the Galleries Focuses on a Love of the Land and Places Held Dear
A new group exhibition, A Time and Place, will be on display March 29-May 20 at The Galleries at the Cabarrus Arts Council. Walter Stanford’s “Century Farms” series of North Carolina family-owned farms, urban landscapes by Julyan Davis, clocks by Irene Semanchuk, birdhouses by Rolf Holmquist and place settings and teapots by Penland potters make up the heart of the exhibition. The group show includes works by 19 artists; the others are Robbie Barber, Barking Spider Pottery, Bre Barnett Crowell, Cynthia Dexter, Gene Furr, Terry Gess, Shawn Ireland, Nick Joerling, Suze Lindsay, Kent McLaughlin, Branch Richter, Ken Sedberry, Gay Smith, Ralston Fox Smith, and David Stickel.
John Brown Quintet Jazz Concert Friday, April 9 at the Davis Theatre
The John Brown Quintet, which garnered national attention when its first CD reached number eight on the Jazz Week charts, will perform at the Davis Theatre Friday, April 9, at 8 p.m. The award-winning jazz group specializes in playing music from the time-honored Bebop and Hard Bop eras, bringing new life to some of the best-known classics of the Great American Songbook and also introducing original music. Tickets are $34.
Penland Potter Gay Smith to Present Free Gallery Talk Thursday, April 8
Gay Smith, a prominent potter associated with the Penland School of Crafts in the North Carolina mountains, will talk about the evolution of her art and demonstrate of how she creates her pots on the potter’s wheel on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. at The Galleries at the Cabarrus Arts Council. Several pieces of her work are included in The Galleries’ current exhibition, A Time and Place.
