CONCORD – A new exhibition celebrating trompe l’oeil, artwork that fools the eye by mimicking reality, will be on display August 28-October 10 at the Arts Council Galleries.

 There are foods that look ready to eat, books seemingly ready have the pages turned and two-dimensional works that almost have to be touched to comprehend they are not three-dimensional.  The show presents artwork created to look very real in ceramics, acrylics, oil, glass, wood and paper.

For Real? includes artwork by 16 artists:

 Dana Brown of Asheville – urban architecture paintings in casein

 Stuart Dunkel of Massachusetts – still life oil paintings of foods, musical instruments, interior details and critters

 Michael Creed of Lynchburg, VA – furniture and functional sculpture

 Katherine Grossfeld of Charlotte – oil paintings of everyday objects such as toiletries, candy and cleaning products

 Patti Quinn Hill of Weaverville – baskets woven of heavy cotton archival paper

 Joel Hunnicutt of Siler City –vessels assembled of 100-300 small pieces of wood

 Philip Jackson of Oxford, MI – still life paintings of unlikely groups of everyday objects

 Missy and Sandy Kaolin of Massachusetts – lifelike, whimsical pottery depicting food

 Rob Levin of Burnsville – blown glass vegetables and vessels

 Jon Littleton and Kate Vogel of Bakersville – blown and cast glass bags

 Johannes Michelsen – sculpted wood hats

 Sharon Moody – photorealistic paintings

 John D. Richards of Burnsville – paper lamps and sculptures

 Robert Tynes of Asheville – paintings that combine abstract brush marks with trompe l’oeil illusionism

 In addition to For Real?, the Arts Council Galleries also will be exhibiting the Cabarrus Art Guild Juried Show August 28-October 10.

Several special events will be held in conjunction with the exhibitions.  A downtown Concord Art Walk, featuring visual art at several locations and entertainment, will mark the opening of the exhibition on Friday, August 28, 6-9 p.m.; download the map at www.CabarrusArtsCouncil.org.  There will be three free gallery talks:  painter Patrick Glover on Thursday, September 10, at 7 p.m; painter Robert Tynes on Friday, September 18, at 10 a.m.; and painter Katherine Grossfeld on Thursday, October 8, at 7 p.m.  Evening gallery talks are co-sponsored by the Cabarrus Art Guild.
