SUMMARY:Cabarrus Art Guild Workshop: A Taste of Paper Marbling: Japanese and European Styles
DESCRIPTION:Curious about paper marbling? In this half-day introductory experience\, students will explore two distinct approaches to this centuries-old art form: Japanese suminagashi and European combed marbling. We’ll begin with suminagashi\, the ancient Japanese practice of floating ink on water to create delicate\, organic patterns. This is an accessible (and very “Zen”!) entry point into marbling\, allowing participants to quickly begin creating original designs. In the second part of the class\, the instructor will demonstrate traditional European marbling techniques\, and students can take turns working on a shared marbling tank to experience these classic combed patterns firsthand. Participants will leave with a collection of their own marbled papers (which can be used in collage\, book-and cardmaking\, decoupage\, etc.) and a foundational understanding of Japanese and European marbling. No prior experience is necessary. For more information\, please visit www.cabarrusartguild.org.

SUMMARY:Painting with Wool
DESCRIPTION:Have you seen a needle felted painting and wondered how they created such gorgeous\, textured designs in wool? In this class you can create a landscape or seascape design provided by Lynn. \n  \nNeedle felting involves a special felting needle being used to stab and agitate wool fibers so they join and bond together. The great thing about the process is that it is relaxing\, creative and just plain fun. As you work your scene begins to develop into an enchanting design.   \n  \nThe process is not difficult to learn\, especially with an instructor who has many years of experience. People in prior classes were able to customize their designs during the session\, each creating a unique personalized piece from the design provided. \n  \nYou have two choices in designs\, shown below. The kit includes all the materials and tools necessary to complete your chosen design. This includes a full spectrum of wool rovings and specialty fibers.  If you are unfamiliar with the term “rovings” it’s the wool fibers that are processed but not yet spun into yarn. It’s usually soft\, fluffy and comes in a long narrow bundle. It is available in many colors. \n  \nThe instructor will assist you through each step of the process offering individual help as needed. You will have a color photo to use for inspiration with the design drawn on the wool base provided.  Instructions including the colors and type of fibers used to create stunning designs will be included. \n  \nLynn is an award-winning fiber designer with extensive experience in a variety of fabric art from felting to batik.  She studied Textile Design with a minor in Art History in a number of universities across the country.  Lynn has been with CAG for four years and is acting as the Director of Education. Lynn is excited to share her experience with other members of the guild and those outside the guild as well. \n  \nWhen you register\, let Lynn know which of the designs you’d like to complete or if you want to create a custom piece. She will prepare a kit just for you. \nBe sure to bring something for lunch during class.
