Sydney Lee is a textile artist from Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a seventh generation quiltmaker through her matrilineal side. Lee has been quilting since childhood, and discovered the overlap between printmaking and quilt making during her formative years of study in Greensboro, North Carolina. She received her BFA in Printmaking and Drawing from UNC Greensboro in 2020.
This body of work explores Lee’s physical world through the lens of quilt making: gathering data through drawings, photographs, maps, and GPS renderings of locations and transforming it into evocative, tactile landscapes. The work is inspired by natural and architectural forms and how they yield unexpected outcomes. Each piece is based on a different location, either sourced or happened upon, that is then communicated through sketches and finally textile works.
